WVSOMExperimentThe West Virginia School of Osteopathic Medicine (WVSOM) wants high school students to “Just Say KNOW to Drugs!” during its second annual summer program.

The one-week pharmacology camp will take place from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., June 23-27 in the main building on the WVSOM campus. It was designed to educate ninth through 12th grade high school students, as well as recent high school graduates, about drugs and how they interact with the body.

The basic biological sciences curriculum will help students exercise their knowledge through activities that utilize the school’s robotic patient simulators. Students will also be able to tour the research and teaching labs on campus and learn about osteopathic medicine. Presentations, debates and educational interactions with current medical students are also part of the camp.

The program is free, but limited to a class of 15 students. Those interested should submit a short essay about why they are interested in the program and include a letter of recommendation from a teacher by May 15.

“The camp is a great experience for any student who may be considering a career in the health and science field,” said Raeann Carrier, Ph.D., WVSOM’s assistant professor of pharmacology and the camp organizer. “The program provides research and clinical exposure in such a fun, interactive way; the students don’t even realize they’re learning.”
