As the weather warms up, WVU Tech’s popular summer camp programs are gearing up for a summer of STEM.
Three separate camps will offer opportunities for both elementary and high school students to explore careers and concepts in science, technology, engineering and mathematics.
Here’s what’s coming up:
Camp STEM
June 23-28 – boys and girls, grades 9-12
WVU Tech’s longest-running camp brings in dozens of students each year for a weeklong dive into all things STEM.
Campers will attend interactive classes and conduct experiments in engineering, forensic investigation, robotics, computer science and more. Students will learn alongside WVU Tech students and faculty in these fields, plus they’ll hear from professionals from STEM industries throughout the region.
The overnight camp also gives students an immersion into the college experience. Attendees will take college-style classes, live in residence halls and eat their meals in the college dining hall.
The camp costs $600, which covers all housing, meals, travel and activities for the weeklong camp. Campers can apply for limited scholarships during the application process.
STEM Summer Academy for Girls
July 7-12 – Girls, grades 9-12
The five-day, overnight program brings in high school girls for an exploration in STEM careers.
Students will take hands-on courses led by professionals in everything from chemistry and biology to engineering and programming.
Campers will also meet with female professionals who are working in STEM fields to learn about girl power in STEM and explore careers in these growing fields. Attendees will also take a day tour at the world-class Summit Bechtel Reserve in Glen Jean, West Virginia.
The Academy costs $500, covering housing, meals and travel for the week. There are full and partial need-based scholarships available for students who qualify.
The camp is sponsored by Toyota.
Elementary Engineering Challenge Camp
July 15-19, boys and girls, grades 1-5
This weeklong, half-day camp allows youngsters to get a head start in STEM.
Campers will learn about engineering design and use their new knowledge to solve problems that characters face in popular children’s books.
The program allows students to explore potential interest in STEM while encouraging them to work in teams and develop their critical thinking skills.
The camp is divided into two sections: one for students in grades 1-3 and another for students in grades 4-5.
The camp costs $250 for the week. Limited financial assistance is available upon request.
